Trumpism's most revealing and distinctive moments – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of a few weeks, the US president commenced revealing the public his intentions for a gilded ballroom twice the size than the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing portion to construct it.
He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of casualties resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and rising, and recently an analysis forecast his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have risked – truly, no previous leader would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the White House in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom have business with the government.
We went from 'the humble will receive the planet' to 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'
As confusing as it is to observe the chief executive try to upend the old idea about democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed across decades as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of hate who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more gradually, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
Therefore allow me to outline the Christ from my childhood, as conceptually the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and given that the rapidly expanding group within America may possess limited understanding of him as they consider themselves skeptics or agnostics or nones. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; but I do think that exist valuable insights of significant worth within Christian narrative.
It is unquestionably definitely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch arising; instead, a baby is born to displaced parents in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to avoid covert authorities. The infant develops in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his teaching concerns compassion for fellow humans, especially for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Christ's response to violence is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a way to educate the attacker; his crime policy states that when an individual takes your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing also.
The obvious and straightforward reality that the Savior of the gospels advocates for a form of extreme compassion centered on the needy has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but because of its intrinsic extremism demanding to be controlled. In the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – Protestantism was so prevalent that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Highest of Us
Therefore I have felt encouraged to see the steadfast resistance against Trump arise during the previous year. It has been substantial consolation to participate in developing the movement that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged electorate to participate in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags during all protests and appeals to the best parts of American history.
