A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using these drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle management.
